Gower Society Youth

We run monthly activities for 4-16 year olds around the Gower Lordship. These activities aim to introduce new ways for children to explore and engage with the Gower countryside. All activities are free, funded by The Gower Society, and based at a different location each month. They range from river dipping and butterfly hunts to woodland adventures and pirate days.

The list of Gower Society Youth activities below is updated regularly so please check for changes. All activities will also be published in the Gower Society programme and on the Gower Society web site. http://www.gowersociety.org.uk

We have started a Gower Society Youth Facebook page. It is a members only page so to see photos of the activities and what is going on so find us on Facebook and like our page. Gower Society Youth has also started an older section for 11+ called Gower Adventurers These sessions will involve children being left with a leader. The aim is then to teach the young people skills to help them become better explorers and discerning users of the countryside.

Contact Nature Days if you would like to become a member of GSY's Gower Adventurers.

Pirate Adventure Day - 12/07/2008 (Archived)

On a very windy day at the end of July a large number of fantastically dressed pirates were sighted on Port Eynon Beach, all searching for John Lucas’ lost smuggler’s treasure. To find the treasure the pirates had to learn to use a map and compass. Once proficient, the pirates set off (for the most part in the same direction) along the beach to look for stamps that could be exchanged for the old Lucas gold. By the end of the day every last doubloon had been exchanged and smuggled away by the pirates. They then meticulously made treasure maps, aging them to perfection.

Gower Show - 03/08/2008 (Archived)

Drop in and see our corner of the Gower Society marquee at the Gower Show. Take part in our colouring and bird identification competition and look at our displays. Penrice is a fantastic site and at the show there is plenty to see, including livestock, horse and dog shows, also food and craft stalls and marquees. It’s an all day event.

Gates open for the public at about 10.00 a.m. There is a charge.

Pinhole Photography - 15/06/2008 (Archived)

The “nations expert” on Pinhole photography Justin Quinnel taught us how to build our own pinhole cameras out of recycled cans.
We then went outside and photographed ourselves and small objects. We then developed the photos in our very own dark room. The photos produced were amazing and we also made some sun pictures using leaves and special paper.
